Day 1: Kolkata to Ganges Voyager II
Arrival and Embarkation
We arrived in Kolkata following an international flight, the bustling capital of West Bengal, and were transported to the Ganges Voyager II, the luxurious river cruise vessel that Uniworld charter exclusively for their guests – it is the ship that Jane McDonald was on for her UK Channel 5 programme.
As we boarded the ship, we found an elegantly designed interior with spacious rooms featuring panoramic windows, private balconies, and en-suite facilities, ensuring a pleasant stay as you sail along the Ganges.
My Viceroy Suite
I got to stay in the Viceroy Suite, of which there are only two onboard – absolutely lovely, fixed king size four poster bed, good positioning on ship, and a day bed in the lounge part of the suite. Any of the Heritage, Viceroy and Maharaj suites allow you to be upgraded in the Oberoi hotels. In the know: all of the upper suites only have fixed king size beds.
For the Uniworld cruise the pricing structure is signature suite (lower deck), colonial suite (middle) then upgraded 2 Heritage suites, 2 Viceroy suites, 1 Maharaj suite
All of us got chance to look at everyone else’s room and the consensus was they were all absolutely lovely. The Ganges Voyager II is an incredibly lovely ship. I am very happy to recommend it to our clients.
Onboard Amenities
The Ganges Voyager II offers a range of amenities, including a spa, a fitness center, and a lounge area where guests can relax and take in the views. Lunch and dinner is served onboard, featuring a selection of local and international cuisines prepared by skilled chefs.

The gym equipment is modern and suitable for a range of fitness levels, ensuring that everyone can stay active while on their cruise. In the evening, we were invited to a sail-away cocktail event, followed by dinner as the ship continued its journey along the Ganges.

After breakfast onboard, we went on an excursion to Kalna. Kalna is famous for its temples which were primarily built during the 18th and 19th centuries by the rulers and local nobility of the Bardhaman Raj, underlining their devotion and patronage of art and architecture. The exquisite design and detailed terracotta work of the temples in Kalna continue to attract tourists and historians alike, making it a cherished destination for those interested in India’s architectural and cultural history. which includes the iconic Nabakailas temples.
We then visited the market and were taken around on an e-tuk tuk before being take back to the ship for lunch and began sailing to Chandernagore.

Our day in Kolkata began with a visit to the flower market, a riot of colours and fragrances where local vendors proudly display their vibrant offerings. The lively atmosphere is infectious, with florists crafting beautiful garlands and arrangements.
Next, we walked to the traditional potters’ corner in the north of the city, known as Kumartuli, where skilled artisans mold and sculpt clay idols of deities.
Our itinerary then led us to Calcutta Rescue’s “Make Travel Matter” slum children school, where we saw firsthand the transformative power of education and community support. This initiative emphasizes the importance of responsible tourism and giving back to the local community.
A visit to Mother Teresa’s house followed, a humbling experience that highlighted the remarkable legacy of compassion and service she left behind. The simple yet profound surroundings offered a quiet space for reflection on her life’s work and the ongoing efforts to support Kolkata’s vulnerable populations.
The morning’s cultural immersion concluded with a stop at the iconic Victoria Memorial, a grand edifice that stands as a testament to Kolkata’s colonial history and architectural grandeur. Amber Fort and Pink City
We began the day with a visit to the majestic Amber Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its intricate architecture and breathtaking views. This included seeing the Jantar Mantar – Maharaj’s astronomical sundial accurate to within a fraction of a second. Astrology is still very much part of day to day life in this area.
The afternoon is dedicated to exploring Jaipur, the “Pink City,” with its bustling bazaars, vibrant markets, and iconic landmarks and included a fantastic lunch in the city palace.
PM- Local Bazaar and Free Evening
An afternoon excursion to a local bazaar offers an opportunity to shop for traditional handicrafts, textiles, and jewelry. The evening is free for you to relax or explore Jaipur at your own pace.
I managed to buy fantastic shirts for around £7 each from a man who said he made shirts for the Maharaj.
We then had dinner at the hotel, which included a lady sitting on the floor making traditional chapatis over a fire which were amazing followed by local performers.
Day 6: Jaipur to Agra

Open from sunrise to sunset. Therefore everyone has to be off site by sunset. But as an exclusive tour group from Uniworld staying at the Oberoi Amarvilas, which is situated beyond the monument car park, we were able to watch the sun coming down and the colours changing at the the mausoleum when it is empty and completely quiet.
The highlight of the trip is a visit to the Taj Mahal at sundown. Guests are transported by golf buggies to the site, where they can witness the monument’s beauty as it changes hues with the setting sun. Dinner was at the hotel

Upon arrival in New Delhi, we checked into the Oberoi, a contemporary hotel offering luxury and comfort once again. It is undoubtedly one of the best hotels in the world and the place where everyone, old and young wants to be seen in New Delhi. The hotel even has its own air purifier, its own lungs, for the whole hotel with a visual display which shows how it compares to outside and to other cities around the world.
Tour of New Delhi
A tour of New Delhi included visits to historic sites, bustling markets, and architectural marvels, showcasing the city’s rich history and diverse culture. Dinner is served at the hotel, offering a range of culinary delights.
This itinerary offers a blend of cultural exploration, luxury accommodation, and memorable experiences, making it an ideal journey for travelers seeking to discover the beauty and diversity of India.
Our afternoon in New Delhi was a mixture of history and adventure, beginning with a visit to Humayun’s Tomb. Often described as a mini Taj Mahal, this stunning monument is an architectural marvel, surrounded by lush gardens and water features. The Mughal artistry and the intricate detailing on the tomb are a testament to India’s past. We continued our journey with a city tour, driving past some of Delhi’s most iconic landmarks.
Next, we paid our respects at Raj Ghat, the site of Gandhi’s cremation. The simple memorial grounds offered a quiet moment of reflection on the life and legacy of the Mahatma on India and the world.
The highlight of the afternoon was a thrilling cycle rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes of Old Delhi. As we wove through the hectic and noisy streets, the sights and sounds of the local markets and the scent of street food stalls and other things filled the air, providing an authentic taste of Delhi’s vibrant culture and everyday life.
We finished the day with a last meal on the roof top terrace of the hotel and amired the city below and the Kites (birds) who flew and circled above.
In the morning we checked out and returned to the airport for a flight home.
It was a once in a lifetime trip. Although shorter than the 12 night tour offered by Uniworld, it gave us a whistle stop look at this incredible journey and the incredible country that it covers.
Guests are incredibly well looked after and escorted throughout the trip. The local staff were friendly and knowledgeable and great company to be around.
