Day 2 - Koblenz
Where the river Rhine and the river Moselle meet sits Koblenz. We’ll spend time wandering the city’s string of charming squares as part of our included tour, before taking the cable car up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress – the perfect vantage point to snap a postcard view of the rivers below.
We sail this afternoon for Cochem and dock overnight.
Excursions & visits:
Koblenz city tour and Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (morning)
Day 3 - Cochem
Huddled among the lush slopes of the Moselle Valley, decorated with a mass of timber-framed houses set on a scurry of streets and a towering medieval castle above – there may not be a more beautiful scene in Germany than the town of Cochem (and there’s some stiff competition).
We’ll spend some time today exploring the 12th-century castle together, before enjoying the local wine with a tasting and setting sail for the next stop on our river cruise.
Excursions & visits:
Cochem castle and wine tasting (morning)
Day 4 - Trier
One of Germany’s oldest cities with an impressive number of UNESCO-listed sites (eight!), you won’t be left twiddling your thumbs here in the ‘Rome of the north’.
Step ashore and join an optional city walk to discover the pastel-hued city centre in Hauptmarkt Square. Well-preserved townhouses create a mix of Renaissance, baroque and classic architecture.
Further afield, the remnants of a Roman metropolis can be found with a number of ancient sights, including the majestic Porta Nigra gate. A worthy stop on our Moselle river cruise.
Day 5 - Bernkastel
Resting in the heart of the beautiful Middle Moselle, Bernkastel is a quintessential medieval German town and a charming stop on our river cruise. Life is unhurried and simple pleasures prevail. It’s one of those places where it’s better to simply ‘be’ than ‘do’.
We’ll spend our morning wandering the beautiful, cobbled streets on an included walking tour. Feast your eyes on the old-time architecture and picturesque streets, then maybe stop for a coffee (or beer) in one of the squares to really soak up the small-town ambience.
Excursions & visits:
Walking tour of Bernkastel (morning
Day 6 - Boppard, Lorelei Passage & Rüdesheim
Awake in Boppard, boasting more than 2,000 years of history. This picturesque town is located in the valley of the mythical Lorelei and an optional walking tour will reveal the town’s history.
The Rheinallee along the waterfront is an attractive promenade, and the Gothic Carmelite Church is famous for its 15th-century choir stalls. Late afternoon we sail south, passing the Lorelei rock where legend has it that a siren sang to sailors, luring their ships onto the submerged rocks where the men drowned.
As you approach the base of the rock, keep your eye out for her bronze statue perched on a narrow strip of land. We’ll arrive late evening into the pretty wine-growing town of Rüdesheim.
Day 7 - Rüdesheim & Lorelei Passage
famous Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum. Watching and listening to the extraordinary self-playing musical instruments is a delight. There’ll then be time for your own further explorations of the town, with its half-timbered houses. Be sure to head to the Drosselgasse and perhaps visit one of the wine taverns or sample the excellent coffee for which this town is renowned, served in ceramic goblets.
We set sail after lunch for an afternoon of sublime scenic cruising as we head northwards, back through the Rhine’s most beautiful stretch, passing through the narrow gorge, with castles dotted along the hilltops.
Excursions & visits:
Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum (morning)
Day 8 - Cologne - UK
