Passion Play & Scenic Wonders of the Danube

After breakfast, we leave Munich behind as we begin our journey to Oberammergau. On the way, we enjoy an excursion to Neuschwanstein – regarded by many as the most beautiful castle in the world. Completed in 1880, it was designed as a fantastical, fairytale palace. With its pointed turrets and soaring towers, it’s safe to say it’s hit the mark as the castle was the inspiration for Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ castle. We arrive in the Ammergau Alps this afternoon and check into our hotel.

Oberammergau is a delightful town in the picturesque Bavarian Alps. Explore the historical town and visit the Oberammergau Museum for an insight into the town’s history and wood carving trade, which is still a major export today. Later, we witness what we have travelled to see; Oberammergau’s Passion Play. During the 17th century, the villagers of Oberammergau pledged that if they were spared from the plague, they would perform the Passion Play – a story of the life and death of Jesus – and have continued to do this every ten years since 1634.

Today, it is world renowned and highly anticipated, with over 2,000 residents involved in the production.

Performances take place in an open-air theatre, which hosts 4,700 people.

After breakfast, we transfer to Passau. Upon arrival, we board MS Bellejour, where light refreshments are available.

Mozart, Brahms and Schubert all called this opulent city home – and you’ll discover their inspiration as you wander the squares and streets as part of our included tour. Together, we’ll view fine baroque churches, palaces and concert halls. Back on board this afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to learn the waltz. This evening brings a special opportunity to watch a classical music concert at one of the impressive palaces in the city.

A city that combines its heritage with a healthy interest in the future, Linz is certainly a unique stop on our cruise. Take it all in with an optional walking tour, or perhaps browse the most important collection of Austrian art history and folklore at Schlossmuseum.

We arrive in the sleepy town of Melk this morning and waste no time in seeing the best bits together on an included excursion. We’ll venture out to explore the magnificent abbey that dominates the town’s skyline – a baroque masterpiece dating back to 1736. Brimming with incredible architecture, including elaborate frescoes and the marble hall, this iconic monastery is home to a gold and marble-lined church. After lunch, we continue onto Dürnstein – the pinch-me perfect town with an enviable position on an idyllic curve of the Danube. In the distance, you’ll spot the ruined castle which once held Richard the Lionheart ransom. You might choose to join the optional orientation tour and wine tasting this afternoon.

Together, we’ll discover fine baroque churches, palaces and concert halls. You might like to return to the ship mid-afternoon and don your dancing shoes for a professional waltz lesson on board. This evening you’ll have the fantastic opportunity to watch a live classical music concert in one of Vienna’s opulent palaces.

Today, we dock in Slovakia. You might choose to join us on an excursion into Bratislava on the tourist train through the city. Wander through the charming old town and past the dominating Bratislava Castle (Hrad) – where 11 kings and 8 queens were crowned. After, take a wander for yourself – the old town is perfect walkable size.

We dock in Budapest this morning with the whole day ahead of us to make the most of the twin city. Enjoy an included city tour of both Buda and Pest with a local guide, which will include an explanation of the city’s unique history. We visit the Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church and the Royal Castle on the Buda Side before crossing the Danube at the Margarete Bridge. In Pest, we will see St Stephen’s Basilica, the Parliament buildings, City Park and Heroes’ Square. The afternoon is at leisure to explore further.

After breakfast, we disembark and transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Upon arrival, your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
