The best part of travelling is to experience new food and drinks. When we went on one of our first Rhine river cruises, we were told that one of the drinks that we needed to try was the Rüdesheimer coffee which is a very localised speciality.
Rüdesheimer coffee is a decadent concoction that blends rich, dark coffee with a generous dose of Asbach Uralt brandy, sugar, and a dollop of whipped cream. This luxurious drink is traditionally served in a special mug that has been heated with a flame, creating a truly spectacular presentation. The heat from the flame not only warms the mug but also caramelises the sugar, adding a delightful touch of sweetness to the beverage.
What sets Rüdesheimer coffee apart from your average cup of joe is the incorporation of Asbach Uralt brandy.
This high-quality German brandy adds a depth of flavour and a subtle kick that elevates the drink to a whole new level of sophistication.
The combination of coffee, brandy, sugar, and cream creates a harmonious blend of flavours that is both warming and indulgent.
Rüdesheimer coffee is a specialty of the charming town of Rüdesheim, located in the heart of the Rhine Valley in Germany. This picturesque town is known for its quaint cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and stunning views of the Rhine River. Many cafes and restaurants in Rüdesheim proudly serve this signature beverage, allowing visitors to experience the true essence of this delightful drink in its place of origin.
In addition to being the birthplace of Rüdesheimer coffee, Rüdesheim is also known for its vibrant wine culture. The town is home to numerous wine taverns and cellars where visitors can sample a variety of local wines, including the famous Riesling. Take a stroll along the famous Drosselgasse, a lively street lined with charming shops, wine bars, and restaurants, and soak in the lively atmosphere of this bustling town.
While in Rüdesheim, be sure to visit the impressive Niederwald Monument, which overlooks the town and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Take a ride on the historic cable car to the Niederwald Forest, where you can explore scenic walking trails and enjoy panoramic views of the Rhine River.
One of the best ways to experience Rüdesheim is via a Rhine river cruise. Many of our river cruise partners offer itineraries that include Rüdesheim as a port of call, allowing you to explore the town and enjoy its many attractions.
Whether you choose to sip on a Rüdesheimer coffee in a cosy café or take a leisurely stroll through the vineyards, a visit to Rüdesheim is sure to be a highlight of your cruise experience.
