As we’re half way through 2019, we’re starting to peek over the horizon looking at new 2020 river cruise holidays for you which are full of adventures, cultural experiences, foodie forays and wondrous encounters.
With so much choice around you, it can be hard to know where to start. Never fear! Whether you’re looking for inspiration or information, Global River Cruising will do the legwork for you, answering your perennial question: where to go when.
To get you started, we’ve outlined three brand new river cruise itineraries which got us all very excited in the office.
2020 marks the year of the Passion Play, part of the Oberammergau River Cruise, which only gets performed once every 10 years. It’s a highly intense but wonderful performance of the trail, suffering and death of Christ.
We’ve also added itineraries which include new stopovers and excursions for European river cruises on the Rhine, Moselle and Danube.
Without further ado, here are the latest 2020 river cruise holidays…
Oberammergau, The Passion Play
We are very excited about the Passion Play river cruise operated by Viking river cruise. The Passionsspiele aka The Passion Play only gets performed every 10 years. If you don’t want to miss this spectacle about the trial, suffering and death of Christ then we highly recommend taking a closer look at this itinerary part of our new 2020 river cruise holidays.
The Passion Play
The Passion Play is keeping the terms of a promise the townspeople made to God after they were spared from the plague in 1633.
Today, many of Oberammergau’s residents still take part in this powerful work of art featuring dramatic performances, beautiful music and choral accompaniment.
You don’t need to be able to speak German to get fully immersed. It is a very special performance that will stay with you forever.
Vineyards of the Rhine & Moselle
The second new itinerary for our 2020 river cruise holidays introduces you to the vineyards of the Rhine and Moselle. This truly is a river cruise that encourages you to indulge in food and wine without counting calories or feeling guilty!
The river crise journey begins with a gentle ride through Amsterdam’s legendary canals, then heads to Cologne where you can whet your palate for the wines ahead by tasting the famous local Kölsch beer (which we highly recommend).
As for the vineyards, you’ll soar above them by gondola or hike among the grapes in Rüdesheim. You will then sip wines in Bernkastel learning the legend of the Bernkasteler Doctor.
Whatever you choose to do ashore, the stories you’re told and flavours that grace your palate will guarantee that you’ll have the holiday of a lifetime.
Vienna, Bohemia & Treasures of the Danube
We’re really pleased that we’re able to offer you a new itinerary for the Danube as part of our 2020 river cruise holidays. Danube river cruises are still one of your favourites so it’s great to be able to offer you additional stopovers.
The Vienna, Bohemia & Treasure of the Danube river cruise begins in beautiful Vienna. We highly recommend spending your day strolling along Vienna’s grand boulevards, admiring its magnificent Baroque architecture and dazzling palaces. We love soaking up the historic atmosphere in one of the city’s legendary cafés over coffee and cake just as the Viennese have for centuries.
After a day in Vienna, it’s time to put your feet up and truly unwind as the exquisite Thomas Hardy ship from Riviera Travel takes you on a journey of discovery along the mighty Danube.
Each day, you have the chance to wander the ancient twisting streets of some of the most quintessentially charming towns in the region. This includes breathtakingly medieval Regensburg with its soaring Gothic cathedral and picture-perfect Český Krumlov, set amidst a fairy-tale Bohemian landscape of rolling hills, glittering mountain streams and shimmering lakes.
One of our favourite places which are the abbeys of Göttweig, overlooking the Wachau region and Krems as well as Aldersbach, one of the most important Baroque churches in southern Germany.

About Christine Foulds
I’m originally from Germany and traveling has always been a part of my family’s DNA. Over the past 20 years, I’ve lived and worked in 5 different countries (USA, Austria, Russia, Peru and the UK) and learnt to speak 3 foreign languages (Russian and Spanish are getting a bit rusty though). I thoroughly enjoy working with travel enthusiasts who like to explore and visit new parts of the world as much as I do.
